United

ter·rorNoun/ˈterər/

1. Extreme fear: "people fled in terror"; "a terror of darkness".
2. The use of such fear to intimidate people, esp. for political reasons: "weapons of terror".

We were terrorized, we were extremely fearful.   We were not, however intimidated.  Our people ran back into the buildings to save their own.  Our police and firefighters sent more and more men and women in to do whatever they could, even though they knew they might not come back out.
Volunteers showed up right away.  Retired FDNY and NYPD came and got to work.  Civilians, not normally in the business of doing hero work showed up.  They picked through rubble, they handed out food and water.  Neighbors gathered in the streets.. Picking up each other's children from school to bring them home to safety.  People prayed.  People donated.  Our country united that day in a way that no one in our lifetime has ever witnessed before.
So yes, they scared us for a few minutes.  And then they secured our unity more than ever.
