This morning at preschool drop off, we saw about 25 monarch butterflies flitting around the butterfly bushes outside the entrance doors. This happened one day last year too, around the first week of school. I've never seen anything like it before then. Last year, there were even more, probably twice as many. Last summer was much warmer in September though, so I guess there were still a lot around.
We planted a butterfly bush in our yard this past spring. It grew so big so fast. And it did the job, it attracted butterflies everyday all summer long. After hurricane Irene, I didn't see anymore. I figured they either had the instinct to fly to safer ground before the storm arrived, or that Irene killed them all. When I got back from dropping off my son, I took the baby to the backyard to check our plant. One lone Monarch. She stayed there all afternoon into the evening. I have a feeling that will be the last time we see the butterflies this year. I think this was their farewell visit before they head south.
