Two birthdays and a funeral...

What a week.  Thursday, my son turned 4.  Friday, I got up extra early to visit Noreen in the hospital.  I didn't leave early enough.  While I drove to the bus, Noreen passed away.  I met up with the tear stained family outside her room and headed upstate with them to help get things organized in the house for the inevitable crowds that would be decending upon them, and also, to be with them.  Just be with them.  Saturday, bbq with my parents and sister's families for both of my boy's birthdays.  Sunday,  cupcakes at breakfast for my younger son's 2nd birthday, followed by 2 rounds of wakes for Noreen. Monday, early wake session-- with both boys in tow, back to Noreen's house for time with their cousins and family.  Sleepover Noreen's house (aka, John's house... aka, John's crash pad).  Tuesday morning, funeral mass and burial with both boys in tow.  More family time at Noreen's.  Get word from Mom that the power keeps going out at our house due to the crazy heat wave taking over the area.  Decide to stay at Noreen's one more night so the kids and I don't have to sleep in 100 degree smog.

WHEW!!!   Take a breath.

Which brings us to Thursday.  We wake and are out the door on the road by 8am.  I got hornswaggled into driving John to Hoboken NJ so that he can take the ferry over to Manhattan to make his 10am court appearance.  It's now about 9:15.  I get hopelessly lost trying to get back to the turnpike from Hoboken.  About 15 or 20 minutes into being lost, my 4 year old gets carsick.  Fa. bu. lous.  Get him out of the car, luckily I have a suitcase full of clean clothes for him, as well as blankets and linens from our long weekend. Strip him down on the side of the road and put him in fresh clean clothes. Wash down his carseat as best I could with baby wipes and cover it with a blanket..   Finally find the turnpike and get home--- 3 hours total drive time for what should have been a 1 hour trip.
Call preschool and explain that the 4 year old will be missing yet ANOTHER day of school. 3rd consecutive absence due to aforementioned birthday, funeral, and now puke.

Friday, all good.  Pack up the boys and head to my best friend's house in NJ.  Beach, park, playdates galore.  And wine.  Lots of wine.  She and wine can cure what ails me every time.  Still here now. The kids are all asleep.  She went out to pick up Mexican take out.

Exhale.
